Saved through faith & Live by faith

Saved through faith & Live by faith

To be “Saved through faith” and to “Live by faith” are two phrases which should be understood in entirely two different ways.

“Saved through faith” refers to the simple faith on the substitutionary sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ, through which an unsaved individual receives the free gift of eternal life.

“Live by Faith” refers to the mature and continuous faith of an individual after he is saved by grace.

SAVED THROUGH FAITH

God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever BELIEVES in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). By birth, all of us are sinners and are alienated from God, destined for eternal separation from God. But when any individual comes to know the love of God revealed through the great sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ, and believes (puts his faith) on Him, he is saved (Acts 16:30, 31).

For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God (Eph.2:8-9)
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Rom.5:1)
The moment any individual is SAVED THROUGH FAITH, he receives the free gift of Eternal Life (John 3:16), he becomes a child of God (John 1:12), he is freely justified (Rom.3:24), he receives the sealing & indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Eph.1:13), he is added/baptized into the church (Acts 2:47; 1Cor.12:13).

LIVE BY FAITH

After any individual is saved through faith, he should now live by faith. “The just shall live by faith” (Hab.2:4, Rom.1:17, Gal.3:11, Heb.10:38). If we are saved from eternal condemnation by putting our faith on the Lord Jesus Christ, we should continue to believe Him and our faith on Him should be revealed through our complete obedience to Him. If our faith is true, then we should be totally obedient to the One on whom we have put our faith. This mature faith is manifested through our works of obedience. Faith without works (obedience) is dead (James 2:17, 20, 26).

When we were “saved through faith” we got the free gift of eternal life. Now if we continue to “live by faith” we will be rewarded according to our works of obedience. For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works (Matt.16:27).
